AFC Playoffs Tickets

Each January, the top six teams in the American Football Conference (AFC) vie for a chance to reach the Super Bowl. AFC Playoffs tickets enable fans to watch the drama and excitement of the NFL's postseason!

AFC Playoffs Tickets: Historical Overview

The AFC Playoffs began in 1970 after the merger between the AFL and NFL. From 1970-77, four teams qualified for the AFC Playoffs. In this format, there were the three division champions and the best second-place (wild-card) team in the conference.  The postseason opened with the divisional round (semi-finals) before concluding with the AFC Championship game on the following Sunday.

In 1978, an extra wild-card team was added to the playoff format. From 1978-89, the two wild-card squads faced off for a spot in the divisional round.

Since 1990, there have been six playoff squads from each conference. From 1990-2001, there were three division winners and three wild-card teams in the playoffs.

In 2002, the league adjusted its structure to feature four divisions in each conference. Now, there are four division champions and two wild-card squads in the playoffs.

Over the last 41 seasons, the AFC Playoffs have produced incredible moments!

In the 1972 AFC Divisional Playoffs, the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Oakland Raiders on one of the most memorable plays in the history of the NFL. Franco Harris grabbed the "Immaculate Reception" in the final seconds of the game to give Pittsburgh a dramatic 13-7 victory. Two years later, the Raiders advanced to the AFC Championship Game on a last-minute touchdown drive against the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Miami Dolphins.

In the 1986 AFC title game, Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway led his squad on a 99-yard touchdown drive in the final minutes to force the contest into overtime against the Cleveland Browns. The Broncos prevailed in overtime to reach the Super Bowl.

In a 1992 AFC Wild-Card matchup, the Buffalo Bills overcame a 32-point deficit to stun the Houston Oilers.

These are just a few of the memorable highlights that have occurred over the years in the AFC Playoffs!
