AMA Supercross Tickets: Historical Overview

The initial American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Supercross champion was crowned back in 1974. In nearly 40 years, the AMA has helped the growth of supercross racing.

The elements of supercross racing involve off-road motorbikes competing on artificial dirt tracks.  The real excitement of supercross racing is derived from the steep jumps and obstacles that are a part of the dirt tracks.

Since a modest beginning in the seventies, the AMA Supercross has really taken off in the last decade. In terms of motorsport events, only NASCAR has a stronger following than the AMA Supercross.

The events are held in large football and baseball stadiums in major markets throughout the country. In 2011, Dodger Stadium, Reliant Stdium, the Georgia Dome and Cowboys Stadium were among the major venues to host an AMA Supercross event. Also, television coverage has helped in the growth and development of the AMA Supercross.

For a typical AMA Supercross show, a few preliminary races will lead up to the main event. In the final race, 22 riders will compete over 15 laps. The winner of the main event race will earn 25 AMA series points.  

AMA Supercross Tickets: Memorable Highlights

Several racing stars have emerged on the AMA Supercross circuit. From 1977-79, Bob Hannah won three consecutive AMA Supercross championships. A decade later, Jeff Stanton broke through to win three titles from 1989-92.

In the last twenty years, two riders have dominated on the AMA tracks. Jeremy McGrath became a prominent figure in motorcycle racing by winning seven AMA Supercross crowns from 1993-2000. He is the only rider to have ever won four consecutive AMA titles (1993-96). More recently, Ricky Carmichael stepped up to capture five championships from 2001-06. 

AMA Supercross Tickets: 2011-12 Schedule

For the 2011 season, there are two events left on the AMA Supercross schedule. On Saturday, April 30th, the circuit will head to Salt Lake City for a race at Rice-Eccles Stadium. On the following weekend, the 2011 AMA Supercross will conclude at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

The 2012 AMA Supercross slate will feature over a dozen races in a schedule that runs from January into early May. AMA Supercross tickets are always an exciting entertainment choice.
