Erykah Badu was raised in Dallas, Texas, where her mother was a theatrical performer, giving Erykah an early introduction to the stage. When she was just four, Erykah Badu was on stage singing and dancing at the Dallas Theatre Center with her mother.

After high school, Erykah enrolled at Grambling as a student of theater, but decided to pursue music full time in 1993. While touring with her cousin, she recorded a 19 song demo "Country Cousins," which attracted the attention of the president of Motown Records at the time, Kedar Massenburg.

Before long, Erykah would sign her first record deal, and in February of 1997, she released her first album "Baduzim." The album would land at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and also featured the single "On and On," which reached number one on the Hot R & B Charts. This effort would earn Erykah two Grammy Awards and establish her as one of the top young performers in the R & B scene!

By the year 2000, Erykah Badu would release her second album "Mama's Gun" which again was met with critical praise and would perform very well on the R & B Charts.
