Gordon Lightfoot was raised near Toronto and enjoyed singing and performing as early as the fourth grade when he sang in front of his whole school.  He would continue to perform throughout high school, and in 1958, he moved to Los Angeles to attend Hollywood's Westlake College of Music.  After a few years, he would move back to Canada and pursue his folk music there, as well as in the U.K., and in doing so, he became an established songwriter, providing material for many up and coming artists of the day.

By 1966, he had landed his own recording contract with United Artists and produced his debut album "Lightfoot!" which brought him increased recognition as both a singer and a songwriter.  By 1970, he would have five studio albums under his belt and would become one of Canada's best known performers and would tour internationally.

In 1970, Gordon Lightfoot would record the hit single "If You Could Read My Mind," which ultimately sold over one million copies and put him on the map in the United States.  He would follow up in the mid seventies with two more enormous hit singles, "Sundown" and "The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald."
