In basketball, the Illinois Fighting Illini have won over 65% of its games. The school has made 29 appearances in the NCAA tournament. On five occasions, Illinois has reached the Final Four.

Several longtime Illini coaches enjoyed strong runs at the university. Harry Combes (1947-48 to 1966-67) and Lou Henson (1975-76 to 1995-96) are legendary figures in the program's history. In 23 of the last 29 years, the Illini have garnered a bid into March Madness.

On the football side, the Illini enjoyed some early success, but have not won many trophies in the last 50 years. Overall, Illinois has appeared in 16 bowl games. Robert Zuppke (1913-41) is the program's most notable head coach. In terms of top players, Red Grange (1923-24) and Dick Butkus (1962-64) are at the head of the class. 

Championship Seasons

On the hardwood, the Illinois Fighting Illini have captured 19 Big 10 championships (17-regular season, 2-tournament). From 1948-49 to 1951-52, Combes won three regular season titles. All three of his Big 10 champion teams in this period advanced to the Final Four.

Early in the last decade, Illinois won a Big 10 regular season and/or tournament title in five consecutive seasons.

In football, the school has recorded 15 Big 10 championships, but only three of the crowns have come since 1963. Zuppke won seven conference titles in a stretch from 1914-28.
