Formed in England in 1968, the group chose the name Jethro Tull after an 18th century farmer and inventor.  They were led by Ian Anderson, who would routinely jump around on stage wearing ragged overcoats while riffing his flute standing on one leg! 

In the beginning, many thought Jethro Tull was a bit too strange to make it past the level of a night club act.  But the combination of bluesy folk rock with solid guitar play, and of course, Anderson's flute would surprise a lot of people! 

Jethro Tull landed a gig in the summer of 1968 opening for Pink Floyd, and then they killed it at the Sunbury Jazz and Blues Festival in Sunbury On Thames, and by the end of that summer, they had a recording contract with Island records. 

Their debut album "This Was" was released in October of 1968 and would reach #10 on the UK Billboard Charts.  Already building a fan base in the U.S., the band released its second album "Stand Up" in 1969, which would climb to #1 in the U.K. and #20 in America!  It would also be the first of many albums to reach Gold status! 

Jethro Tull would produce their most successful album with 1971's "Aqualung," which would reach the triple Platinum level and establish the band as an international force.  They would go on to produce over 20 studio albums through 2003 and still remain one of the most unique rock bands in history!
