Les Miserables is a dark and rather dreary tale that takes place over a 17-year period in the early 19th century in France. The Broadway show is based on the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo. True to its name, which means literally "the miserable ones," Les Miserables is fraught with the struggles of ex-con Jean Valjean, who must learn to create a new life for himself after his incarceration.
Throughout his free life, Valjean becomes a factory owner and promises to care for the daughter of one of his dying workers. Valjean and the daughter, Cosette, spend time on the run themselves, before Cosette falls in love with a student named Marius, who she eventually marries.
