MLS Cup Tickets: Historical Overview

In 1993, Major League Soccer (MLS) was founded. While professional soccer was a vastly popular sport in most regions of the world, the game had never really taken off in the United States. The formation of Major League Soccer enabled the sport to become a little more relevant in America.

In 1996, MLS staged its debut season with ten teams. Today, the league features 18 squads (16 in United States, 2 in Canada).

The MLS regular season runs from March through October. In the 34-game schedule, each team plays the other 17 clubs in the league at home and on the road. For the playoffs, five teams from each conference (Eastern and Western) qualify for the postseason.

The league's "Super Bowl" crowns a champion in the MLS Cup. The first championship match was held at Foxboro, Massachusetts in 1996. Seven other venues have also hosted the MLS Cup over the last 14 years. In 2010, the MLS Cup took place in Canada for the first time as the title match was held in Toronto.

In the early days of the MLS Cup, D.C. United was the league's dominant squad. In the first four years of the event, the United won three MLS Cups. Overall, D.C. United's four MLS Cups are the most for any team in the league.

Early in the last decade, the San Jose Earthquakes and Los Angeles Galaxy both emerged to win a pair of MLS Cups. In 2006-07, the Houston Dynamo joined D.C. United as the only MLS club to win consecutive championships. With six appearances in the MLS Cup, the Galaxy has made the most trips to the league's title match.

In terms of standout performances in the MLS Cup, Marco Etcheverry, Landon Donovan and Connor Casey are among the players that have won MVP honors in the game.

The highest attendance for an MLS Cup game was 61,316 in 2002 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.
