In 2010, the Philadelphia Union began to compete in the league. A key part of the movement to land an MLS squad was the construction of a soccer-specific stadium. PPL Park (capacity of 18,500) opened in the middle of the 2010 campaign. The stadium is located in Chester, Pennsylvania.

The Philadelphia fans rewarded Major League Soccer's decision by acquiring all 12,000 season ticket packages for the first year of play.
