Although Sammy Hagar first began his career as a boxer, he soon abandoned his boxing ambitions for a career in music. The late 1960s saw Hagar performing with a number of California bands, including Skinny, the Fabulous Catillas, Justice Brothers and Dust Cloud.

But it wasn't until he joined Van Halen in 1985 that Hagar's star really began to shine. It was then that Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth; the newly revamped Van Halen released their 1986 album, 5150, and Hagar released his last solo album in 1987.

Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hagar remained with Van Halen, where they produced several multi-platinum albums, including OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and Live: Right here, Right Now.

Tensions began to run high between Hagar and the rest of his band members around this time, and Hagar left the band in 1996. Amidst the media spectacle, Hagar released a 1997 solo album entitled Marching to Mars. Sammy Hagar formed a backing band, and two years later, released Red Voodoo. It produced a hit single, "Mas Tequila." Sammy Hagar continued to release albums in 200, 2003, 2006 and 2008. Hagar also introduced a new band in 2008, Chickenfoot, and they released their self-titled debut album in 2009.
