San Diego Padres Tickets: History of The Friars Club

The Padres came into Major League Baseball in 1969 as part of the league's continuing expansion, along with the Seattle Pilots (who became the Milwaukee Brewers,) the Kansas City Royals, and The Montreal Expos.

Even with a solid and loyal fan base, the franchise suffered in the early years and did not post a winning record until their 10th season led by Gaylord Perry and Dave Winfield.

It wasn't until 1984 that the fans really had something to cheer about.  The team featured a great lineup, including Tony Gwynn, Steve Garvey, Garry Templeton, Carmelo Martinez, Craig Nettles, and Goose Gossage.    They would win 92 games to capture the NL West by 12 games over the Braves and would face the Chicago Cubs in the playoffs.

In the best of five series, the Padres would come home down two games to none and would win game three and game four (on a Garvey walk off HR!) to force a fifth and deciding game.  Down 3 to 0 in the sixth, the Padres would rally for a 6 to 3 victory, capturing the Pennant and sending the city of San Diego into bedlam!

A Season to Remember

After winning the NL West two seasons prior and then missing the playoffs the year before, the 1998 Padres were not projected to finish very high in the standings.  However, led by 1996 Manager of the Year Bruce Bochy, the Padres would surprise a lot of people that season.

With a lineup including Ken Caminiti, Wally Joyner, Tony Gwynn, Steve Finley, and Kevin Brown, the Padres would win 98 games and capture the NL West by 9 games.  They would beat the Houston Astros in the first round of the playoffs and face the Atlanta Braves for the Pennant in the NLCS.  The Padres would win the first three games and then clinch in game six to capture the National League Pennant for the second time in franchise history!

The Padres Cometh This Season

This season, the Padres look to fill the void left by the departure of slugger Adrian Gonzales.  Will Venable and Chase Headley should produce solid numbers, and those with San Diego Padres tickets are looking for Brad Hawpe to match the solid numbers he produced in Colorado a few seasons ago.  The rotation will be anchored by young Matt Latos, who is coming off a 14 win season last year.
