Serj Tankian was born in Lebanon, and when he was eight years old, he and his family moved to Los Angeles.  He would meet fellow musicians in high school, and while he was attending college, he began to write songs and play instruments. 

The early nineties saw the formation of the band Soil, with Serj on vocals and keyboard.  After struggling for a few years, two of the members departed, and the band broke up. 

In 1994, Serj would form a new band called "System of a Down," which began headlining the L.A. music scene for many years.  Ultimately, the band would find great success, including a Grammy award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2006.  That same year the band would announce an indefinite hiatus, and in 2007, Serj would release his first album as a solo artist titled "Elect the Dead," which opened at #4 on the Billboard 200 with 66,000 copies sold!
