Seattle Mariners Tickets: A Father and Son History

The Marinerss were founded in 1977 and adopted the team nickname as a tribute to the marine culture in and around the Seattle area.  After the Seattle Pilots franchise was moved to Milwaukee in 1970, Seattle fans waited patiently for Major League Baseball to return to the area.  On opening night in April 1977, over 57,000 fans filled the Kingdome to see the beginning of a new era in Seattle baseball.

Playing hard over the years, the Marinerss would begin to build a winning tradition in the 90s with the help of Ken Griffey Jr. who was an emerging superstar in the league.  Junior's father, all-star Ken Griffey Sr., would actually join his son on the Marinerss roster for two seasons, becoming one of the first father-son tandems to play together in the majors.

On a very special day in Anaheim in 1990 with his son waiting on deck, Griffey Sr., batting second, would hit a homerun with one on and nobody out.  Ken Griffey Jr. would then step up to the plate and belt one over the wall for the first ever back to back father son HRs in MLB history!

Lou's Winners

In 1993, baseball great Lou Piniella would begin a nine year run as the Marinerss manager, and before long, the team began to win.  In 1995, with players like Griffey Jr., Jay Buhner, Alex Rodriguez, Edgar Martinez, and Randy Johnson, the Marinerss would finish the season with 79 wins and overcome a 13 game deficit to capture their first ever Western Division championship!

They would win the West again in 1997 and make the playoffs in 2000.  Then in 2001, led by the great Ichiro who would capture the American League MVP, Rookie of the Year, batting crown, and stolen base leader, the Marinerss would win an astonishing 116 games to capture their third Western Division Championship!

Don't miss the winning tradition with your own Seattle Mariners tickets today!

Building on Tradition

This season, Ichiro will continue to lead the team, as well as third baseman Chone Figgins, who is solid at third base.   Adding pop to the lineup and coming off of a solid last season with a team leading 64 RBIs is outfielder Franklin Gutierrez.
