D.C. United is one of the original ten teams in Major League Soccer (MLS). Since beginning play in 1996, the club has played its home games at RFK Stadium (capacity of 45,596). The historic venue was the home of the NFL's Washington Redskins for many years.

In the early days of Major League Soccer, D.C. United was one of the elite squads in the league. The team made four consecutive postseason appearances from 1996-99. After failing to make the playoffs in each of the next three years, D.C. United rebounded to most five straight trips to the postseason. Since 2008, the club has regressed again and not made an appearance in the playoffs.

Over the years, the Washington D.C. market has shown some solid support for the team. With the exception of the 2010 season, D.C. United has averaged more than 15,000 fans per game at home in every other year. On two occasions, the squad averaged more than 20,000 spectators per outing at home in a season.  

D.C. United Tickets: Memorable Highlights

In 1996, D.C. United won the first MLS Cup championship. In the title match at Foxboro, Massachusetts, the club defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy in overtime by a final of 3-2.

D.C. United was able to return to the MLS Cup in 1997. This time, the squad played for a championship in front of its home fans. At RFK Stadium, more than 57,000 spectators were on hand to watch the home club defeat the Colorado Rapids by a final of 2-1.

In the following year, D.C. United was once again a competitor in the MLS Cup. On this occasion, the team would be on the losing end of a 2-0 contest against the Chicago Fire.

In 1999, the D.C. United dynasty continued with a fourth consecutive appearance in the MLS Cup. With a 2-0 victory over the Galaxy, the franchise closed out an amazing run of success.

Five years later, D.C. United captured its fourth MLS title with a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Wizards.
