Invented nearly a half century ago, Dame Edna is the flamboyant alter ego of character actor Barry Humphries, and is by her own accounts, just a "housewife and mega star!" 

In 1955, Humphries was touring with the fledgling Union Theatre Repertory Company as they performed Twelfth Night.  As the company toured across the country, they would be greeted by a representative from the Country Women's Association in each town in which they were set to perform.  Humphries would begin to entertain the troupe in between shows with his impression of the falsetto Melbourne housewife, largely evident in the CWA's representatives they would meet.  As the character developed, she became Ms. Everage and finally Edna, named after Humphries' nanny! 

By the end of 1955, Edna would perform on stage in front of an audience for the first time.  Edna starting playing comedy clubs, delivering her wit and satire and eventually would debut in London.  By 1970, Edna had been on a variety of television shows, and in 1972, the Australian Prime Minister would actually refer to her as "Dame." 

She would continue to bring her stinging views and hilarious commentary to the stage, and in the late seventies, performed off-Broadway in New York for the first time.  Dame Edna would appear regularly on Australian television for the next decade, and her persona and image increasingly grew in stature and popularity. 

In 1993, Dame Edna would appear on the Phil Donahue Show, and her Australian shows would be shown on PBS in the U.S., broadening her exposure throughout the nineties.  In 2002, she appeared on an Ally McBeal episode, and in 2004, she would appear on Broadway.  She would also make her first of many appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2006.
