Flogging Molly was the brainchild of Irish-born Dave King, the former lead vocalist for the heavy metal band Fastaway. King began developing the idea of combining rock music with traditional Irish instruments like the mandolin, fiddle and accordion. Finding it difficult to land a record deal for his new concept, King began recruiting musicians to form a band to back him up in his style idea.

Guitarist Ted Hutt, bassist Jeff Peters and fiddler Bridget Regan began this rock band with a Celtic influence and began playing at a Los Angeles pub known as Molly Malone's - the place that gave this group its current name. As the band grew in popularity and more Flogging Molly tickets began to sell around Los Angeles, the band gradually recruited additional members as well.
