During this time, he earned a considerable amount of recognition from both the country music industry and the rock music industry. Much of his music from this time dealt with issues surrounding his father, and it was evident that many of the songs were dripping with raw emotion about his father's death and his own insecurities.

Hank Williams Jr. was named Entertainer of the Year by the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association in both 1987 and 1988, and according to one industry critic, he has managed to shake "the lingering spirit of his father's style."  His style, which is rough, edgy and sometimes wild, is all his own. He has consistently toured and released new work throughout his career.
