The Houston Dynamo was created in 2006 as an expansion franchise in Major League Soccer (MLS). However, the Dynamo was a unique expansion squad. The Dynamo began with the roster from the San Jose Earthquakes team that was put on hiatus following the 2005 season. With many fans making the trip across the state to Frisco, Texas, the Dynamo won a penalty shootout against the New England Revolution to claim the title.
In the following year, the two franchises would once again square off in the MLS Cup. At RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., Houston was able to repeat as MLS champions with a 2-1 triumph.
Several players have stood out for the Dynamo in the last few years. Brian Ching won MVP honors in Houston's first MLS Cup victory. He is the all-time franchise leader in goals and game-winning goals. On defense, Pat Onstad has excelled for the Dynamo. The former Houston goalie is the all-time leader in games, shutouts, saves and wins for the team. Dwayne De Rosario is another former standout for the Dynamo. He won the MVP in the 2007 MLS Cup for Houston.
