Orange Bowl Tickets: Historical Overview

The first Orange Bowl was held in Miami on New Year's Day in 1935. From 1938 until the late nineties, the game's venue was itself called the Orange Bowl. This stadium was the site of many classic college and pro football games during its history of more than 60 years. Since 1997, the Orange Bowl has been played at Sun Life Stadium (capacity of 74,918).

For many years, the Orange Bowl was a part of the classic New Year's Day bowl lineup that also consisted of the Cotton, Rose and Sugar Bowls.

From the mid-fifties through the mid-nineties, the champion of the Big Eight Conference was usually one of the teams selected for the Orange Bowl. Currently, the ACC Champion is slotted as one of the squads to play in the contest each year.  Since 1998, the Orange Bowl has been one of the four games associated with the Bowl Championship Series (BCS).

Every four years, Miami will host the BCS title game in addition to the regular Orange Bowl matchup.

Orange Bowl Tickets: Memorable Highlights

Of the 77 Orange Bowl games that have been played, there have been many memorable highlights and moments. Over the years, many national championships have been decided in the Orange Bowl.

Under legendary head coach Bud Wilkinson, the Oklahoma Sooners won four Orange Bowls and three national championships during the fifties. In the early seventies, the Nebraska Cornhuskers capped off national title campaigns with victories in the Orange Bowl.

Most view the 1984 game as the most memorable Orange Bowl. In an intriguing matchup, top-ranked Nebraska faced off against the upstart Miami Hurricanes. With plenty of home support, Miami hung in as the underdog team. Trailing by seven points late in the game, Nebraska scored a touchdown to pull within a single point. In an era where there was no overtime in college football, the Cornhuskers could have gone for a tie to secure a national title. However, Nebraska went for the win on a two-point conversion, but failed to give Miami the national championship in a classic 31-30 contest.
