His early professional career was spent mainly as a songwriter, and it wasn't until 1968 that he recorded his self titled debut album, which was a critical success but did not dent the top 200 music charts at the time.  In 1970, Randy Newman released "12 Songs," which again found critical success but did poorly sales wise. 

It wasn't until his live album "Randy Newman Live" was released in 1971 that he finally broke into the Billboard Top 200!  In 1972 he released "Sail Away" which featured the heavily covered song "You Can Leave Your Hat On." 

By 1977, Randy Newman would release his sixth studio album titled "Little Criminals" which would be his best performing album and featured the hit song "Short People."
