After his formal training ended in 1944, he began composing music for several ballets, and by 1949, he was in charge of Vadya Vrinda at the All India Radio.

Ravi Shankar began to achieve a worldwide following in the 1960s when he worked alongside with George Harrison, a member of the Beatles, and his work began appearing in many of the Beatles' songs. This collaboration helped to popularize Indian classic music throughout the world. His first concert tour in the United States happened in 1957, and by 1962, he founded the Kinnara School of Music in Bombay.
