Wanda Sykes was born Virginia and raised in and around Washington D.C.  She graduated from Hampton University with a Bachelor's degree intent on a career in marketing.  It was around this time an impromptu performance at the area's Super Talent Showcase gave her a taste of doing stand up for the first time.  It was 1987, and this was just the spark she needed to build her career over the next decade!

Wanda Sykes would hone her stand up skills, but jumpstarted her humor as a writer for The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show and The Chris Rock Show.  This would lead to small parts in front of the camera in the television series Curb Your Enthusiasm and the movie Pootie Tang.  Before long, her unique and edgy style would land her roles in The Nutty Professor II and Down to Earth.

In 2003, she had her own sitcom, Wanda At Large, and also appeared in her own Comedy Central special Tongue Untied.  She again appeared in several movies, including My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Evan Almighty, and Monster in Law.

With a unique tone, Wanda Sykes has lent her voice to several animated movies, including Over the Hedge, Barnyard, and Brother Bear 2.  She has also authored a book titled "Yeah, I Said It", has performed before the president, and has appeared in the stage musical Annie.
