Washington Wizards Tickets: Franchise Overview

The franchise originally began in Chicago for the 1961-62 season. After just two seasons, the club moved to Baltimore and became known as the Bullets. After ten seasons in Baltimore, the franchise made the short move to Washington, D.C. In 1997-98, the club's name was changed to the Wizards.

In the early years, the franchise struggled. From 1961-62 to 1967-68, the team suffered through seven straight losing campaigns.

However, by the seventies, the Bullets were one of the top squads in the league. In the decade, the team never missed the playoffs.

Since the early eighties, the franchise has been one of the weaker squads in the NBA. Over the last 28 years, the club has won just a single postseason series.

Guard Earl Monroe, center Wes Unseld and forward Elvin Hayes are among the top players in the history of the franchise.

Washington's Championship Season

In the seventies, the Bullets won more conference titles than any franchise in the NBA. In 1970-71, Monroe led the club into the NBA Finals. The Bullets were overmatched by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the Milwaukee Bucks. Four years later, Hayes and Unseld were able to lead Washington to another Eastern Conference title. As a heavy favorite against the Golden State Warriors, the Bullets were swept in the finals.

In 1977-78, Washington tried again to win a championship. In a finals matchup against the Seattle Supersonics, the Bullets were facing a 3-2 series deficit heading into game six. Washington rallied to win the final two games of the series to finally win a title. In the next season, the Supersonics won a finals rematch against the Bullets.

Home Arena

The Washington Wizards have played at the Verizon Center (capacity of 20,173) since the 1997-98 season. The arena is also the home site for the Washington Capitals of the NHL. In a great atmosphere, Washington Wizards tickets are a unique entertainment option for the entire family.
